5 Nvidia SHIELD Tips, Tricks and Hacks for Blazing Fast Performance

The SHIELD is a great media streamer. It's already faster out of the box than most others. But if you want to tweak it to make it even faster, there are a few things you can do.

[1] Tweak The Processor and Fan Mode

The settings for this can be found under SETTINGS/SYSTEM/DEVICE SETTINGS.

Then under PROCESSOR MODE, change it from “Optimized” processor mode to “Max Performance.” Optimized will help your SHIELD run a little cooler. It slows down the processor in favor of lower temps. Max Performance will keep the processor running at full speed.

We set every SHIELD to Max Performance from the day we bought it and it never gave us a lick of trouble. So if you want to squeeze every last ounce out of performance from your Nvidia SHIELD, go ahead and make this change.

If you change Processor Mode to Max Performance, you will also want to change the Fan settings. This should also be done at the same time and it should be changed from "QUIET" to "COOL." Even with this change, we barely hear the fan running on our SHIELD. But it does sit inside a cabinet on top of a large computer heatsink. This may help it run a little cooler.

If you have your SHIELD mounted behind your TV, you may want to leave these set to factory default.

[2] Enable Developer Mode For More tweaking options.

To enable Developer Mode, go to SETTINGS/ABOUT/DEVICE PREFERENCES. Developer Mode is hidden by default and must first be turned on to access more secret settings on your SHIELD.

To turn on Developer Mode, scroll down to BUILD. This is actually a hidden button and you must repeatedly click on BUILD until it turns on Developer Mode.

Once turned on, "You are now a developer!" will appear, and it will show additional menus you can access to make some more performance tweaks to your SHIELD. To access these settings go back to the DEVICE PREFERENCE Menu and scroll down to the very bottom of the list. There you should now see a menu named {Developer Options}

Inside this menu are three settings that will make your SHIELD Interface feel a little snappier. They are ANIMATION SCALE, TRANSITION ANIMATION SCALE, and ANIMATOR DURATION SCALE. Turn on all three by sliding the little slide switches to the right.

[3] Change Window Animation Scale

By setting this to a lower number from 1x to Animation Scale .5x and it will make opening and closing apps a little faster.

[4] Changing Transition Animation Scale

This will change how quickly animations are drawn on the screen. Change this also from 1x Transition Animation Scale to 0.5x

[5] Animator Duration Scale

This tweaks the small animations that appear when pressing buttons. Also, change this setting to Animator Duration Scale from 1x to 0.5x

Leave the rest of the settings in Developer mode alone. They won't do anything for performance and if set incorrectly can have the opposite effect and make things run slower.
