Just because you download apps from Google Play does not always mean they are secure and safe from malware

Last year, an app that scans barcodes on the Google Play Store was downloaded 10,000 times. This app contained a trojan that goes by several names: TeaBot and Anatsa.

The app then gave the trojan creators access to passwords, texts, and other sensitive data on user devices. This is not the first time infected apps were on the Play Store.

Cleafy, the research group that first detected the app and notified Google to remove it, said the malware is back and has infected many more apps. At last count, it was over 400 in several languages.

What makes thing even worse, only a couple Android malware scanners could detect it. This is troubling for many Android users, especially so for those who and keep sensitive data on it.

With increased cyber threats happening now because of the war in Europe, now is a good time to be extra vigilant when installing new apps. Either side loaded, and even from the Google Play store.

Be sure to set up two forms of user identification on as many of your accounts as possible. This makes it much harder for hackers to get into your accounts. Also, pay extra attention to emails and phone calls telling you of impending doom.

One good trick they like to use is telling you someone purchased something expensive like an iPhone on your Amazon account and they are the Amazon fraud department. Don't respond, instead visit Amazon's or your bank's site directly to see if there are any recent transactions you may not be aware of. Chances are there won't be.

If you want to scan apps for malware, before you install them, try the VirusTotal online scanner. It's free, and will offer you additional peace of mind. https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload

Be careful out there, Cyber attacks may be on the increase, so keep your guard up.
