With a new football, Disney and DirecTV are involved in a contentious carriage fee negotiation with Disney pulling their content including ABC & ESPN from the satcaster.
A factor in all carriage fee negotiations of late is the impact cord cutting has had on revenue of both companies, as consumers continue to watch more content on streaming platforms. For example, in 2011 ESPN had 100 million household subscribers (86% of U.S. homes). Last month, ESPN had just over 66 million household subscribers (53% of U.S. homes).
