Over the last few few years, we’ve reported pretty regularly on firings and layoffs at all of the big media companies, often wiping hundreds, and, in the aggregate, thousands of jobs out over multiple waves of cuts. Some of these have been in the departments that directly make TV and movies, but way more of them have been in the fields that support that work: marketing, finance, development, all the less forward-facing jobs that allow a studio to function. The fact that these nigh-constant layoffs have been happening at a time when it feels like streamers have been spewing out more and more “content” might feel paradoxical, but a new report from Puck‘s Matthew Belloni breaks down at least two of the reasons so many studios seem to be shrinking: Massive (and somewhat panicked) debt-reduction efforts, and a simultaneous push to smoosh as many diverse parts of these companies as possible down into a few consolidated groups...
