Netflix Has a Massive Influx of New Subscribers During COVID-19 Shutdown

As with any major shift in the economic winds, there are winners and losers. Netflix is a winner because they just added 16 million new subscribers during the last 3 months.

The losers are big cable TV operators who just can't seem to catch a break. Their subscribers are leaving in record numbers in favor of more affordable streaming TV options.

This influx of new subscribers, gives Netflix a worldwide subscriber base of 183 million monthly paying customers. And this makes them one of the most watched streaming services of all. Surpassing Amazon Prime by a rather large margin. Prime just reached 150 million subscribers in February of this year.

While 150 million is nothing to sneeze at, a percentage of Prime subscribers very likely don't even use their streaming video service at all. Because they mainly bought Prime for the Free 2nd day shipping. Netflix subscribers on the other hand, exclusively use their streaming service to watch TV. So when it comes to the number of hours streamed, the gap is even wider.

Hulu, the number 3 largest streaming service has far fewer subscribers and at last count they had 30.7 million subscribers as of April this year.

Disney+ which just launched last year has already amassed a whopping 29 million subscriber base.

Why Is Netflix So Popular?

There are several reasons why Netflix is ahead in global subscriptions.

1. The Best User Interface - When it comes to navigating their app, Netflix is far ahead or both Prime Video and Hulu. The Netflix app looks more polished, is easy to use and looks more professional.

2. Most Original Content -Netflix has spent billions of dollars building original content for it's platform. And unlike cable TV, there never any shortage to good stuff to watch.

3. The Oldest Streaming TV Company - Before streaming TV, Netflix used to rent DVDs which were shipped directly to customer's home mailbox. So they have had a long time to figure out what works best and how to do it right and had a large customer base to start with.

Something to think about...

As hard as it may be to stay home in self-isolation, imagine a world where this virus hit us 10 years earlier and all we had to watch was cable TV or satellite... It could always be worse. :D

With all the new customers Netflix has been signing up in the last couple months while stuck at home, no doubt it has an effect on overloading their bandwidth capabilities. :?
